International Day of the Girl

Today is International Day of the Girl! A day where we can we can celebrate the achievements by, with and for girls. The 2019 theme is Girl Force: Unscripted and Unstoppable. I think for those who are paying attention that is very true of the girls right now, right across the world.

Girls are advocates of change and power now. Not in the future, NOW. This is the dangerous idea today proposes, image if we could get out of the way of the GIRL FORCE that is spreading like wildfire. What if we were capable of creating platforms and opportunities worthy of their spark? We do not need to empower young women, they are already empowered. We need to listen, support and then get out of the way and watch them do it. It will look and sound different to anything we have witnessed before.

To celebrate this day I will be taking a group girls to spread joy all over Sydney, with a burst joy coming from original songs. The girls have all learnt how to tell their story and put it with a melody! These girls travel outback with me to teach and facilitate workshops with other young girls just like them. This idea is to spread and create music is like wildfire. These young women are unscripted and unstoppable.

When you are watching a 13 year old effortlessly run a room and write her own story, then turn it into a catchy melody, seriously everyone in that room can say - if she can, I can.

Ways you can get involved for International Day of the Girl:

1 - Create a platform on your social media or at work for a girls voice. Share stories of girls who are “unscripted” and “unstoppable”. Pay it forward.

2 - Interview women aged 35-45 years old who were girls when International Day of the Girl was created in 1995. Ask them what has changed in the last 25 years.

3 - Ask women you know to retell a story of “the bravest girl they have ever met.”

4 - Find a way to spread some joy and celebrate how wonderful the girls of 2019 are!
