The House Commission 2022

What work needs to be written now?

The House is seeking expressions of interest from established Australian woman composers for a commission of an Original Contemporary Opera.

This commission is an exciting opportunity for a woman composer to create an Original Contemporary Opera that will be developed by The House that Dan Built in 2022. This program supports the development of new works composed by women and champions the importance of women’s voices being heard within the arts. The House successfully launched this program in 2021 with the commission of Bagatelle by Sally Whitwell.

The successful applicant will be commissioned in 2022, to develop and compose an original contemporary opera in collaboration with The House Performance Ensemble and Artistic Director Danielle O’Keefe. This work is to be made for the Performance Ensemble, made up of twelve young women aged 14–28 and up to three professional artists.

The composer will receive an artist's fee of $10,000, and support from The House throughout the development and creation of the work. The House will perform a showing of this work in 2022, building to a premiere production season in 2023, contingent on funding.
