Shy Magsalin is a Sydney-based theatre director and actor. She works and trains regularly with the Suzuki Company of Toga (SCOT) in Japan and is head of the theatre ensemble Ninefold in Sydney. Shy graduated from the University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor of Performance, Theory and Practice (Theatremaking) before questing to deepen her knowledge of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training with companies such as Zen Zen Zo (Brisbane), OzFrank Theatre (Brisbane), SITI Company in New York (2007, 2009) and, finally, SCOT in Japan (2008, 2012-current). She has directed and performed locally, interstate and internationally. Projects include 'The Blue Book' (International Theatre Ensemble, Sweden 2009), 'Macbeth: 9 Scenes Rehearsed' (Sydney 2014), 'Room' (Earthcrosser Company, Sydney 2014), 'The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria' (International SCOT, Japan 2014), 'The Tale of Lear' (SCOT, Japan 2015), 'Kachi Kachi Yama' (SCOT, Japan 2016), 'The Tragedy of Antigone' (Ninefold, Sydney 2016) and 'The Blue Bird' (International SCOT, Japan 2017).
Mel is a freelance designer and maker for theatre, film, dance and circus. Recent costume design credits – Love’s Labour’s Lost and Edward II (Sport for Jove). Set and costume design highlights- The Trolleys and Between Us (ATYP), Yellow Moon (MTC), This is Beautiful (Malthouse Theatre), Yarn, Button and Closed for Maintenance (La Mama), The Dream Factory (St Martins Youth Arts Cente), Automorph Dyuetto (Dancehouse), Dreams from the Second Floor (NICA). As resident costume designer at the Ballarat Arts Academy (now Federation Uni) 2008-2013, productions include A Jovial Crew, The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Gypsy, The Hatpin, Spring Awakening, and Murder on the Ballarat Train.
As a costume maker- Bell Shakespeare, Legs on the Wall, BighART, Malthouse Theatre, Australian Ballet, Victorian Opera. Costume design for feature film- Moonlite (2011), Academy (2007), Max- A Cautionary Tale (2005). Short film- The Widow (2015), Therapy (2015), Comeback (2012), Hugo (2008), Hollow Bones (2007). Melanie recently received a Sydney Theatre Award nomination for her costume design for Sport for Jove’s Love’s Labour’s Lost. She graduated from The Victorian College of the Arts in 2001 with a Bachelor of Creative Arts.
